Excerpt from Mermaids Never Drown
After the initial shock of hitting the water, Lori was calm
as she broke the choppy surface and waved toward Ken to let him know she was
okay. No novice to deep water, she treaded to keep afloat as she watched him
turn the small craft around and come back to rescue her.
"Over here," she called, knowing he couldn't hear her over
the noise of the engine, but he could see her waving hand and sped toward
her. Right toward her! If he didn't kill the engine, those steel
blades would pass directly over her! Without waiting to be sure, she tucked
and dove, straight down, her body piercing the deep water like an arrow.
When she surfaced, she could see that he was turning the
boat around and circling back from the other direction. Poor Ken. It must
have scared him as much as it did her. He was new at boating and didn't
quite know how to maneuver it. If he would just cut the motor, she could swim
to him and climb into the boat. He was headed her way again, and it almost
seemed like his speed had increased. Again, she was directly in his path.
What was he trying to do? An all too familiar panic seized her as she
plunged again, her heart racing wildly. Looking up, she could see the big
steel blades passing over her head. How long was it going to take him to get
control of the boat? Or was he even trying? Was it possible this was yet
another deliberate, evil attempt to harm her? But surely not Ken--and
yet. . .
